A few hours later I was making a chickpea curry and a big pot of rice for my suppers when my phone chimed from the living room where it was charging. I had to check it to see if it was Aaron, but I didn’t want to burn my garlic. I considered giving him his own tone, so I would know right away.

Soon enough the tomatoes were in, simmering away, and I could check my phone.

It was Aaron. Warmth rose in my chest at his name. It disturbed me. Maybe it was heartburn, but it felt a lot like happiness.

Hi, how was your day? I’m heading home from my parents. I wish I could see you today, but I have to finish payroll or no one will want to work for me anymore. Call you later? Catch up? Phone sex?
